Perhaps these really are super jeans. Maybe they really are magical. Maybe they go grocery shopping and make dinner, change your cat litter regularly, forward through commercials of Top Design on your DVR, push your cuticles back and parallel park your car. It's Saturday morning, a little after 10:00 am, and right now, I'm sitting in LAB B at CCA, California College of The Arts, in San Francisco. I signed up for a 2-weekend Graphic Design refresher course called Adobe CS3 Fundamentals. I'll be in class today until 5pm and tomorrow, Sunday, it will all start again at 10am. I graduated from SFSU in 2005 with a B.A. in Graphic Design and Marketing and now I'm back for more! When I graduated, I was so ready to be done with school. I was beat down and I just wanted to relax. But it's calling me back! Wish me luck!

The Grain of the Future: Quinoa!

"Quinoa (pronounced KEEN-wah) is the grain of the future!", said my friend Michelle A. She's right. "The protein in quinoa is considered to be a complete protein due to the presence of all 8 essential amino acids (chetday.com)."

The quinoa seed is high in protein, calcium and iron, a relatively good source of vitamin E and several of the B vitamins. It contains an almost perfect balance of all eight essential amino acids needed for tissue development in humans. It is exceptionally high in lysine, cystine and methionine-amino acids typically low in other grains. It is a good complement for legumes, which are often low in methionine and cystine. The protein in quinoa is considered to be a complete protein due to the presence of all 8 essential amino acids. Some types of wheat come close to matching quinoa's protein content, but grains such as barley, corn, and rice generally have less than half the protein of quinoa. Quinoa is 12% to 18% protein and four ounces a day, about 1/2-cup, will provide a childs protein needs for one day. The 6-7% fat of quinoa is relatively high when compared to other grains, but it boasts a low sodium content and also provides valuable starch and fiber. Quinoa also contains albumen, a protein that is found in egg whites, blood serum, and many plant and animal tissues. The seeds are gluten-free which makes this a nutritious and flavorful alternative grain for those with gluten sensitivity. Quinoa would be a worthy addition to anyone's diet, supplying variety as well as good nutrition. (from http://chetday.com/quinoa.html)

International Quinoa Salad

Quinoa:

1 1/2 cups quinoa, rinsed very well
2 1/4 cups water
1 clove garlic, minced or pressed
1/2 tsp. salt (optional)

Vegetables:

1 large cucumber, peeled, seeded, and diced
2 medium-large tomatoes, finely chopped
kernels of 2 ears of cooked corn (about 1 cup)
1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and diced
1 1/2 cups cooked chickpeas
1/2 cup scallions, thinly sliced
2/3 cup parsley -- minced
1/3 cup fresh mint -- minced
1 ripe avocado, peeled, pitted, and diced (reserve a few slices for garnish)

Dressing:

1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (NOT lemon)
3 tablespoons vegetable broth or bean cooking liquid
1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste (optional)
1/8 teaspoon ground pepper
1 clove garlic, pressed or minced
1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon chipotle chili pepper

To cook the quinoa in a pressure cooker, place it and the water, garlic, and salt in the cooker and lock the lid. Over high heat, bring to high pressure and cook for one minute. Remove from heat and allow the pressure to come down naturally. Fluff the quinoa and allow it to cool.

Combine all of the vegetables in a large bowl. Add the quinoa and mix well. Whisk the dressing ingredients together and pour over the salad. Mix well and refrigerate until chilled. Taste before serving, and add more lime juice as necessary (you want it to be tangy). Garnish with avocado slices and serve. Makes about 10 servings.

Brrrr, could it be any colder here in San Francisco?

I don't know about you, but my skin and my lips are DRY! I need a miracle on 34th Street! Here are a few things I've been doing to cope during these bone-chilling moisture-wicking days:

+ Before bedtime, I apply a generous amount of lip balm to my lips. Then, when I wake up and brush my teeth, I brush my lips too. This sloughs off any dry skin and makes my lips soft and supple again. I apply lip balm daily and every night before bedtime for maintenance.

+ Another tip: Egyptian Magic . I slather this cream all over whenever possible. I like to apply the cream all over my feet, cover with socks and leave on overnight. Do this a few times a week and your feet will be softer than ever!

+ And, just because it's fun and damn good, there's hot chocolate. Try Williams-Sonoma's Hot Chocolate, trust me on this one (leave some for me)!

Keep Your Mani-Pedi Looking Fresh!

Right now, I'm obsessed with two nail colors: Vamp for my hands and Jasmine for my feet, both by Chanel. I keep them in my purse (what don't I keep in my purse?) in case I can nab an appointment at ManiPedi. While I was there last weekend sipping green tea and reviewing just went wrong with Ryan and Reese, I asked Ann, my lovely Nail Tech, what I could do at home to maintain my manicure.

Here are a few easy tips:

+ To prevent polish chipping, reapply a top coat daily
+ At night, use a cuticle cream (or a good moisturizing lotion) to massage into cuticles and hands. I like Egyptian Magic for hands and feet!
+ When cleaning, wear gloves
+ And lastly, don't use your nails as tools!
